UNDP Launches Two-Track Initiative to Bring Blockchain to Public Sector

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has unveiled a two-pronged strategy to integrate blockchain technology into public sector operations, aiming to facilitate wider adoption. A training academy for government officials and an advisory group will work in tandem. The academy’s initial launch within weeks is targeted at four pilot countries, while the advisory group is expected to commence in two to three months. This initiative draws on UNDP’s extensive research that identified over 300 potential use cases for blockchain across various public sector functions including payments, identity, supply chains, and social protection. Training will provide a more practical framework for implementing projects beyond proof-of-concept stages. The agency has also created an expanded Blockchain Academy to educate thousands of UN personnel in blockchain and web3 technologies, which will be extended to civil servants with the goal of bridging classroom learning with real-world implementation.
