France Implements New Tax on Unproductive Crypto Assets

France has implemented a new tax aimed at wealthy individuals holding large cryptocurrency holdings, classifying them as ‘unproductive wealth’. This measure levies a 1% annual tax on assets exceeding €2 million, which remain idle. The amendment to France’s 2025 budget marks one of the most aggressive fiscal proposals towards digital assets in the European Union. Unrealized gains on cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin will also be subject to taxation under this new framework.
