ECB Targets 2027 for Digital Euro Pilot Launch

The European Central Bank (ECB) has announced plans to launch a pilot program for its digital euro in 2027, contingent on EU lawmakers approving the necessary legislation next year. This project, which began in 2021, aims to bolster Europe’s financial autonomy amid growing reliance on U.S.-based payment systems and stablecoins. The ECB envisions limited real-world testing of the digital euro system between mid-2027 and a potential initial issuance during 2029 if legislation is finalized.
