Vitalik Buterin and Anatoly Yakovenko Debate Layer-2 Security in Ethereum

A heated exchange between Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko is shaking up the crypto community, focusing on the security of Ethereum’s Layer 2 (L2) networks. Buterin defended Ethereum’s L2 architecture on X, claiming that even if 51% of validators collude or face a software bug, they can’t steal user assets. However, he acknowledged that limitations exist if their tasks extend beyond the blockchain itself. Yakovenko challenged this perspective, arguing that L2 security claims are flawed. He pointed to the Wormhole ETH exploit on Solana, which experienced similar vulnerabilities as Ethereum on Base while generating comparable revenue for ETH L1 stakers. Yakovenko believes the inherent flaws in L2s make achieving desired security difficult.
