Regulatory Challenges Hinder OpenAI’s Digital Identity Project in Thailand

OpenAI’s digital identity project, World, formerly known as Worldcoin, faces scrutiny from Thai authorities. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) conducted a raid on an iris scanning facility linked to the platform after concerns about potential violations of local regulations emerged. This action was taken in collaboration with the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB), targeting a location suspected of operating under ‘WLD exchange services.’ The SEC’s investigation focuses on whether World’s WLD token distribution, achieved through iris scanning at designated orb locations across Thailand, complies with local digital asset regulations. The platform claims to operate within legal boundaries and only distributes WLD tokens in regions where such activities are permitted.
