OpenAI has informed users that ChatGPT functionality on WhatsApp will cease from January 15, 2026, as a result of changes in WhatsApp’s platform policies. Users can continue their interactions with the AI chatbot through its existing interface – ChatGPT Atlas, which offers features like voice interaction, in-depth research, and file uploads. However, users must link their phone numbers to their ChatGPT accounts via the ‘1-800-ChatGPT’ contact URL on WhatsApp to ensure historical chats sync seamlessly after January 15, 2026. Notably, after this date, chats will no longer transfer automatically through WhatsApp and exporting chat history from the platform won’t be supported. OpenAI recommends users act promptly by completing the linking process and accessing guidance on its Help Center.
