Sandeep Nailwal, co-founder of Polygon and CEO of the Polygon Foundation, has publicly criticized Ethereum’s leadership, questioning his own loyalty to the network. In a recent X post, Nailwal highlighted the lack of support from the Ethereum Foundation (EF) despite Polygon’s substantial contributions to the ecosystem. He cites the disparity in valuation between Polygon and its close affiliation with Ethereum as a major driver for this dissent. While acknowledging Polygon’s success stories, including Polymarket and zkEVM technology, Buterin emphasized that the network currently lacks a proof system required for full Ethereum layer 2 status. Nailwal’s comments come amidst growing discontent within the Ethereum community, further fuelled by former researcher Peter Szilágyi’s earlier complaints about the EF. Industry leaders, like Solana co-founder Raj Gokal and former Solana Foundation leader Austin Federa, suggest Polygon should explore collaborations with Solana or even become a layer 2 solution on the network as an alternative. Despite acknowledging these contributions, Buterin remains firm in the assertion that Polygon is not yet considered a true Ethereum layer 2.
