Bhutan Pioneers Decentralized National ID System Using Ethereum

Bhutan has made history by transitioning its national identification system to a decentralized platform built on the Ethereum blockchain. This move marks the beginning of a multi-year effort, expected to be fully implemented by the first quarter of 2026, and signifies a significant step towards a secure, self-determined future for citizens. The transition, already in progress, will enable nearly 800,000 citizens to manage and verify their identities through a blockchain-based system. This is considered a global first, as it will allow the entire nation to control and secure its data while maintaining privacy.
