Bhutan is taking a bold step towards a more secure digital future by transitioning its national self-sovereign identity (SSI) system from Polygon to Ethereum. This move will empower its residents of roughly 800,000 people to authenticate identities and engage with government platforms via Ethereum’s blockchain. The transition was announced by the Ethereum Foundation President Aya Miyaguchi at a high-profile event featuring Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and Bhutanese officials. 800,000 citizens will be granted access to secure digital governance through this technology, with migration planned for the first quarter of 2026. 10 years into its existence, the Ethereum Foundation celebrated this milestone by highlighting the potential of blockchain in building a more open and secure digital future for everyone.
