SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service will invest almost R2 billion ($116 million USD) in South Africa, aiming to launch its services and provide high-speed internet access to millions of citizens. This investment follows regulatory requirements for foreign companies, including the establishment of a Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) company and utilization of an Equity Equivalent Investment Program (EEIP). Starlink will partner with local internet service providers to build infrastructure in schools using an open-access model, connecting over 2.4 million students nationwide. The investment also includes a substantial contribution of R500 million ($29.1 million USD) to connect thousands of schools to high-speed internet, further addressing digital literacy and the growing need for reliable online access.
