U.S. Labor Department Launches Review into Economic Data Collection Challenges

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General is investigating challenges faced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in collecting and reporting economic data. The investigation comes after the BLS reduced data collection for key inflation indicators: the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the Producer Price Index (PPI). Additionally, recent revisions to the monthly Employment Situation Report from the BLS have caused concerns regarding job creation figures. This review will focus on analyzing challenges related to collecting and reporting PPI and CPI data, as well as monthly employment data including its revisions.
