A high-profile kidnapping case involving businessman Shailesh Bhatt has resulted in the sentencing of 11 law enforcement officers to life imprisonment. Bhatt was abducted at a gas station in Gujarat by men posing as federal agents and held for ransom, with his Bitcoin holdings targeted. The kidnappers initially demanded a large sum but eventually received a smaller portion of his bitcoin after negotiations. The case became especially notable due to the involvement of senior law enforcement officials, including a former district police superintendent who was found guilty not only of kidnapping and extortion but also abuse of power. Former Gujarat legislator Nalin Kotadiya, who had evaded arrest for several months before being apprehended in 2018, is also among those sentenced.
