Tether Ditches Support for USDT on Five Blockchains

Tether is sunsetting its USDT stablecoin on five blockchains – Omni, BCH SLP, Kusama, EOS, and Algorand – starting September 1st, 2025. This move marks a shift in Tether’s focus towards Ethereum and Tron ecosystems, where they prioritize scalability and developer activity. The company will halt new issuance for unsupported tokens on these chains. Existing USDT holders can transfer their tokens, but no new issuance or redemption will be allowed. USDT users on the impacted chains should expect reduced trading volumes as liquidity diminishes. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino explains this decision as a way to prioritize platforms with greater developer activity and scalability. The change allows for continued USDT transfers but disrupts their ability to issue new tokens on these chains. While this change will likely affect market liquidity, it aligns with historical patterns of blockchain support shifts, indicating a potential shift in market dynamics favoring supported networks.
