Hong Kong Elderly Man Targeted in Cryptocurrency Exchange Robbery

A 77-year-old man from Hong Kong suffered a significant financial loss due to a fraudulent cryptocurrency exchange scheme. On August 25th, the victim intended to purchase stablecoins worth HKD 3 million at a virtual currency exchange shop located on Jervois Street in Sheung Wan. Two male employees allegedly deceived the victim by placing the cash into a specialized safe, then departing under false pretenses. They later accessed the back of the safe outside the shop and stole the funds. To delay the victim’s realization of the theft, they transferred approximately HKD 78,000 worth of stablecoins to a woman’s electronic wallet. Upon realizing he had been scammed after waiting for the employees’ return, the elderly man reported the incident to the police. Authorities subsequently reviewed CCTV footage including images from the Sharp Eyes program and conducted a thorough investigation and intelligence analysis. In less than three days, the police arrested three suspects, including both men and women, and recovered a portion of the stolen funds.
