US Tightens Restrictions on China’s Chip Imports, Impacting Samsung and SK Hynix

The U.S. government has tightened its restrictions on chip exports to China, revoking previous approvals that allowed firms like Samsung and SK Hynix to acquire crucial manufacturing equipment from American suppliers. This move comes after the Commerce Department imposed broad export limits on U.S. chip equipment in 2022 but granted carve-outs for some companies. These carve-outs are now being removed, requiring these companies to apply for licenses before purchasing U.S.-made tools for use within China. Intel also lost its authorization to operate in China, although it had already sold its Dalian facility earlier this year.
