Record Crypto Heist: $91 Million Stolen via Social Engineering Scam

A staggering $91 million in Bitcoin has been stolen in one of the largest social engineering scams to date, highlighting the vulnerability of crypto security even amongst experienced users. The incident involved a complex impersonation scheme targeting a high-net-worth individual or institutional investor. Blockchain sleuth ZachXBT revealed the attacker’s modus operandi – they impersonated both a cryptocurrency exchange representative and a hardware wallet technician, convincing their victim to divulge sensitive information like private keys or seed phrases, ultimately leading to the funds being laundered through Wasabi Wallet, known for its privacy-enhancing features. 783 Bitcoin were moved shortly after the breach, demonstrating how this kind of attack exploits trust and confusion.
