Russia Enforces Government-Backed Messaging App on All Devices

The Russian government has mandated the pre-installation of a government-backed messaging app, Max, on all mobile phones and tablets sold in the country starting September 1st. The decision follows legislation passed earlier this year requiring the development of a homegrown messenger linked to public services. Max, developed by VK, a Kremlin-controlled tech company, aims to offer messaging, video calls, payments, and access to state services. This move is part of Russia’s broader strategy to curtail Western messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram after they were restricted for refusing to share data with law enforcement during investigations.
