E-hailing Driver Killed in Violent Clash Outside Maponya Mall, South Africa

A tragic incident occurred outside Maponya Mall in Soweto, South Africa, where an e-hailing driver was shot at and subsequently set ablaze. The violent act, allegedly perpetrated by minibus operators battling for control of transportation routes in the area, has resulted in a death and sparked outrage. According to reports, two cars involved were targeted: a white one and a red one. Videos circulating online show assailants pursuing the red car before it is attacked with gunfire and then doused with gasoline before being set ablaze. The National e-Hailing Federation of South Africa (NEFSA) confirmed the incident in a statement expressing their sorrow for the deceased’s family, colleagues, and communities. The federation highlighted that this act reflects the dangerous environment within the South African public transport sector and urges authorities to intervene. 4 months ban on e-hailing drivers was issued due to violence. A similar incident occured four days prior at Protea Glen Mall where one e-hailing driver was injured and his car was set alight.
