The ChatGPT mobile app has achieved remarkable success, generating $2 billion in consumer spending since its debut in May 2023, according to new estimates from Appfigures. This figure dwarfs the combined lifetime mobile spending of rivals like Claude, Copilot, and Grok. The app’s rapid growth is evident in its impressive year-to-date performance, bringing in $1.35 billion between January and July 2024, representing a staggering 673% increase from the previous year’s figure. Average monthly spending has soared to near $193 million, reflecting increased user adoption. While competitors like Grok are lagging behind with around $25.6 million in consumer spending so far in 2025, ChatGPT’s dominance is reflected in its app downloads and revenue. Appfigures shows that the average consumer spends $2.91 per download for ChatGPT globally compared to Claude ($2.55), Grok ($2.55), and Copilot ($0.75). The US remains the most lucrative market for the app, accounting for 38% of its revenue so far. Grok’s launch was later than ChatGPT in November 2023, initially part of X before becoming a standalone app. The app’s success is further fueled by its impressive install numbers, exceeding 690 million downloads worldwide versus Grok’s 39.5 million. Elon Musk’s criticisms regarding the App Store’s impact on competition have drawn attention, with claims that Apple suppresses competition and unfair practices. In a recent public appearance, Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, dismissed Musk’s concerns, stating he pays minimal attention to Musk and views him more as a figure who tweets about his frustrations than a competitor.
