The Ethereum Foundation has pledged a significant financial commitment to support Roman Storm, a co-founder of the crypto mixing protocol Tornado Cash, who faces criminal charges in the United States. The Foundation will contribute $500,000 directly and offer matching funds up to an additional $750,000 from community contributions. This action comes as Storm prepares for trial on July 14th, accused of operating Tornado Cash as an unlicensed money transmitter and engaging in illicit activities like money laundering and violating U.S. sanctions. The prosecution alleges that the service was used to obscure billions in illicit transactions, including funds linked to North Korea’s Lazarus Group.
