Bitcoin Core v30: OP_RETURN Limit Increased to 4MB, Sparking Debate

The latest update to Bitcoin Core (v30) brings a significant change to the platform’s OP_RETURN system, increasing the data storage capacity from its current limit. This expansion opens the door for new possibilities on the blockchain, but it also raises concerns about potential drawbacks. 4MB of additional data storage will be available starting in October 2025. This is a direct result of a prolonged developer debate over how best to manage data usage and has been championed by core developers, such as Antoine Poinsot. However, this change isn’t universally welcomed, with some expressing worry about the increased burden on the blockchain’s network and potential for clogging it up. 2025 is when this upgrade will be implemented in Bitcoin Core.
