Ukrainian Man Arrested Over Alleged Cryptojacking Scheme

A 35-year-old man from the Poltava region of Ukraine has been apprehended for allegedly engaging in an illegal cryptojacking operation targeting a prominent international hosting company. Ukrainian authorities report that the suspect exploited security vulnerabilities within the company’s online systems, gaining unauthorized access to over 5,000 customer accounts since at least 2018. He reportedly deployed virtual machines and cryptocurrency miners to mine cryptocurrencies without consent from the company, causing significant financial losses estimated to exceed $4.4 million in Ukrainian hryvnias. The suspect changed his residence frequently across multiple regions to avoid detection. Law enforcement officials seized computers, mobile phones, bank cards, and other evidence related to the investigation during a search of the suspect’s residence. The collected materials included email account access authorization data used for hacking, crypto wallets, and software designed for managing crypto mining operations and remote equipment control. The accused faces charges for unauthorized interference with electronic information communication networks, which could result in up to 15 years imprisonment if convicted. Additionally, he may be banned from engaging in IT and communications-related activities for up to three years. The investigation is ongoing, and further action might be taken.
