Crypto Hack Losses Plummet in May, But Cetus Exploit Remains a Major Threat

May 2025 saw a significant decrease in the total value stolen through cryptocurrency hacks, according to data from blockchain security firm PeckShield. While 20 major breaches were recorded, the industry collectively suffered losses of around $244.1 million – a sharp 39% decline compared to April. However, this overall drop was heavily influenced by one single incident: the Cetus decentralized exchange hack, which accounted for nearly all of the stolen funds in May, representing 90% of the total losses. This major exploit occurred on May 22nd and resulted in approximately $223 million lost within 24 hours – making it one of the most impactful cyberattacks this year.
