Panama City Eyes Bitcoin Payment System Inspired by El Salvador’s Approach

Panama City officials have hinted at a potential adoption of Bitcoin payment systems similar to El Salvador’s model, as announced by Mayor Mayer Mizrachi at the recent Bitcoin 2025 conference. The city has already taken steps towards accepting Bitcoin payments for municipal services like taxes and parking fees, with legislation allowing residents to utilize Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins for these transactions. Additionally, Mizrachi outlined plans for priority passage through the Panama Canal for vessels paying tolls in Bitcoin. This initiative is fueled by President Bukele’s pioneering stance in El Salvador, who made his nation the first to legalize Bitcoin as currency four years ago. The Panama Canal Authority has yet to offer a formal response to this proposal.
