A cunning crypto scam, orchestrated by Chirag Tomar, resulted in a significant loss for victims exceeding $240,000. The mastermind targeted Coinbase users, creating fake websites to steal login credentials and two-factor authentication codes. In addition, they impersonated the official Coinbase support team to gain access to real accounts, draining funds with alarming speed. Coinbase swiftly engaged law enforcement to investigate this case. By leveraging their expertise in blockchain forensics, they were able to trace stolen assets, identify victims, and gather essential evidence. This ultimately led to Tomar’s arrest at the Atlanta airport in December 2023, followed by a five-year prison sentence in 2024. Coinbase underscores that crypto facilitates effective fraud detection as it leaves a permanent digital record of every transaction.
