U.S. Consumer Confidence Index Soars Despite Recession Concerns

The U.S. Consumer Confidence Index experienced a significant surge in May, rising to 135.9 according to Odaily reports. This improvement is largely attributed to a dramatic increase in consumer expectations, which jumped 17.4 points to reach 72.8. Though this rebound signifies a positive trend after five consecutive months of decline, it still falls short of the critical threshold of 80, often indicating an impending economic recession. According to Stephanie Guichard, senior economist at the Conference Board, consumers have seen improvement in their outlook for the coming six months. This optimism was spurred by factors such as the recent resolution of the U.S.-China trade agreement and has since further bolstered consumer confidence.
