Following a major heist of $300 million from Coinbase users, the hacker involved has reemerged, swapping $42.5 million worth of Bitcoin (BTC) to Ethereum (ETH) using Thorchain, a decentralized platform for cross-chain transactions. Shortly after the swap, the hacker targeted blockchain sleuth ZachXBT with a public message onchain, challenging the analyst’s efforts and potentially demonstrating their confidence in their ability to operate within the crypto landscape. The hacker then dumped 8,698 ETH into DAI, a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar, for $22.12 million before continuing to move assets without being stopped. This brazen action raises questions about the effectiveness of current decentralized finance (DeFi) security measures and their ability to ensure asset recovery in such situations.
