Ripple CTO Addresses Coinbase’s Bitcoin Price Discrepancies

Coinbase experienced a notable price disparity during Monday’s market turbulence, as users pointed out significant differences between buying and selling Bitcoin. One user reported finding a $104,500 buy price on Coinbase, while selling at $101,950. This discrepancy led to confusion among retail traders as Bitcoin briefly surged past $107,137 before plummeting to $102,105. Ripple CTO Jeremy Schwartz stepped in, seeking clarification from users about whether they were placing orders on the order book or using Coinbase’s brokerage service with associated fees. He highlighted that Coinbase operates both as an exchange and a brokerage, impacting pricing strategies. Understanding these nuances is crucial for traders during volatile market conditions, especially when spread sizes significantly increase.
