An Australian man has been stripped of nearly $2.88 million worth of assets, including Bitcoin and luxury vehicles, after a major asset forfeiture case initiated by the Australian Federal Police (AFP). The seizure is part of a long-running investigation linked to suspected criminal activity dating back to 2018 when Luxembourg authorities tipped off the AFP about suspicious Bitcoin transactions associated with the man. Authorities allege that these funds were connected to cybercrimes, including the theft of 950 Bitcoin from a French cryptocurrency exchange in 2013. Despite no formal charges being brought for this Bitcoin theft, a court ruled that his assets could not be proven as legitimate income, leading to the forfeiture order issued in April. This case is further complicated by a prior conviction of Shane Stephen Duffy for fraud and hacking, where he sold stolen personal data belonging to League of Legends players. 2016’s convictions followed years of alleged illegal activity connected to his role in the sale of hacked information obtained from League of Legends and targeting Riot Games’ president Marc Merrill’s social media account. This history, combined with a lack of clarity surrounding the source of his wealth, played a significant factor in the AFP’s decision to pursue asset forfeiture under the Proceeds of Crime Act. The confiscated assets will now be sold and the proceeds invested into community safety initiatives as part of the CACT’s effort to fight crime and fund law enforcement activities.
