A groundbreaking achievement in space technology has been announced: Filecoin and Lockheed Martin have successfully transmitted data via satellite using a modified version of the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS). The announcement came from Marta Belcher, president of the Filecoin Foundation, during the Consensus 2025 conference in Toronto. This collaboration involved adapting IPFS for use in space, resulting in successful tests. The key to this success is IPFS’ ability to identify data based on its content rather than its location. This feature is particularly beneficial in space applications as it mitigates delays caused by the vast distances between Earth and satellites, reduces data corruption from radiation, and enables cryptographic verification for data integrity.
