Pakistan has signed a landmark cryptocurrency agreement with World Liberty Financial (WLF), a DeFi firm where the Trump family holds a significant stake, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest amidst ongoing peace negotiations between India and Pakistan. The timing of the deal coincides with recent talks aimed at resolving tensions between the two nations. While Donald Trump claims to have facilitated these peace efforts, India has remained skeptical of his role. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s newly established Crypto Council (PCC) is rapidly striking deals with WLF to accelerate cryptocurrency investment and innovation within the country. The PCC’s swift actions have been met with scrutiny, particularly given its short lifespan and rapid expansion of partnerships. The delegation from WLF, led by Zachary Witkoff, son of Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, met with key Pakistani officials including Prime Minister, Army Chief, and Defense Ministers, to solidify the partnership. This initiative aims to position Islamabad as a leading crypto hub in South Asia. The deal includes a Letter of Intent signed between WLF and the PCC, outlining plans for blockchain innovation, stablecoin adoption, and decentralized finance integration across Pakistan. The involvement of prominent figures such as Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and Jared Kushner – all with histories of utilizing their White House connections to advance business interests – has drawn criticism. Adding further complexity is Steve Witkoff’s significant presence in Washington, frequently visiting Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, which raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest. The deal also includes the participation of Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) as a strategic advisor to the PCC. Pakistan already boasts a robust cryptocurrency scene, ranked 9th globally by Chainalysis for active users and yearly transactions. This partnership seeks to position Pakistan alongside UAE’s crypto-focused initiatives, hoping to capitalize on blockchain technology’s future potential.
