Zimbabwe Introduces Blockchain-Based Carbon Credit Registry for Improved Transparency

Zimbabwe has taken a significant step towards boosting transparency in its carbon credit system by launching a blockchain-based registry system. The country’s Environment Minister, Evelyn Ndlovu, highlighted the launch of this new system developed by A6 Labs during an event in Harare. This innovative platform enables the issuance, trading, and cancellation of carbon credits with complete traceability, ensuring data integrity. Previously, Zimbabwe faced challenges after canceling several carbon credit projects in 2023 and imposing a 50% revenue tax on them, disrupting international developers’ operations and leading to uncertainty within the sector.
