To facilitate a trade agreement with President Trump’s administration, India has proposed reducing its tariff differential with the United States from approximately 13% to less than 4%. This move seeks to secure exemptions from existing and potential U.S. tariffs. Notably, this reduction would decrease the average tariff gap between the two nations by nearly 9 percentage points, marking a significant effort by India to lower trade barriers on a global scale. With India being the US’s largest trading partner, bilateral trade reached approximately $129 billion in 2024. Currently, the trade balance favors India, boasting a surplus of $45.7 billion with the United States.
