A Virginia man, Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa, has been sentenced to over 30 years in prison for providing financial and material support to the international terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS). According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Chhipa channeled thousands of dollars towards ISIS between 2019 and 2022, primarily to aid female members of the group in escaping detention camps and supporting active fighters on the ground. Chhipa’s efforts involved raising over $185,000 through social media and direct collection, which was converted into cryptocurrency before being sent to Turkey for smuggling across the border into Syria for ISIS operatives.
