Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is exploring new ways to pay content creators on its platforms using stablecoins. The social media giant is reportedly holding discussions with several cryptocurrency firms to evaluate deploying these digital currencies for payouts, particularly targeting creators in a move that could reshape how they are compensated. This initiative comes after Meta shelved its earlier blockchain project, Diem, which faced regulatory obstacles and ultimately ended in 2022. The company has now appointed Ginger Baker, experienced fintech and crypto expert, to guide their exploration of stablecoin use. Baker’s role is critical in evaluating different stablecoin options, with a focus on facilitating small payouts (around $100) to creators across various regions.
