G7 Leaders to Address North Korea’s Cyber Crimes as Cryptocurrency Theft Skyrockets

The Group of Seven (G7) countries plan to discuss North Korea’s growing cybercrime activities, particularly its recent surge in cryptocurrency theft, during a meeting in Alberta, Canada, scheduled for June 2025. This discussion follows reports indicating that North Korean hackers have intensified their attacks on Web2 and Web3 finance institutions including banks and cryptocurrency exchanges, specifically in 2024 and 2025. These actions have resulted in significant financial losses for victims, with the FBI estimating a $1.5 billion theft from Bybit exchange earlier this year alone. 2024 data by Chainalysis shows that North Korean hackers stole an estimated $1.34 billion through 47 attacks.
