Bitcoin Core Eliminates 80-Byte OP_RETURN Data Cap

Bitcoin Core developers have decided to eliminate the longstanding data limit for OP_RETURN outputs, a move set to significantly alter how information is stored on the blockchain. This decision, announced by developer Greg Sanders, will allow larger OP_RETURN transactions exceeding 80 bytes, removing previous restrictions and sparking debate within the Bitcoin community. This proposal, originating from a request by Chaincode Labs, was initiated as part of Pull Request 32359. The original cap, designed to encourage responsible on-chain behavior, has become outdated due to users finding workarounds that may negatively impact network efficiency.
