Texas Congressman Calls for Crypto ATMs in Federal Buildings

Rep. Lance Gooden has urged the General Services Administration (GSA) to consider installing crypto ATMs in U.S. government buildings, aligning with a pro-crypto stance championed by former President Trump. Gooden argues that this move would promote digital finance education and address the growing interest in cryptocurrency. He requested a review of potential installations, proposing clear rules for installation and operation, including identity verification and fee transparency. This proposal comes as lawmakers weigh new fraud prevention laws aimed at preventing scams targeting vulnerable users. While the GSA currently allows traditional ATMs in its buildings, it’s unclear if crypto ATM installations would be authorized without Congressional approval. Gooden’s move follows a push to address crypto-related fraud, including bills introduced in the U.S. Senate that would limit transaction sizes and require identity checks to combat scams impacting seniors. Despite mixed results for crypto ATMs operators like Bitcoin Depot, which faced declining revenue even as cryptocurrency prices rose, this proposal highlights ongoing debate surrounding the use of crypto ATMs in a broader regulatory landscape.
