Bitcoin Mining Turns to Sustainable Energy Sources: New Study Reveals Shift

A new study by Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance reveals a significant shift towards sustainable energy sources in Bitcoin mining. The report shows that the use of sustainable energy reached 52.4% as natural gas overtook coal as the leading energy source. Nuclear and renewable sources, including hydropower and wind, now power over half of the energy used in Bitcoin mining. This represents a substantial increase from the estimated 37.6% usage of sustainable energy in 2022. Natural gas currently accounts for 38.2% of Bitcoin’s energy use, up from 25.0% in 2022, while coal usage has dropped to 8.9%, down from 36.6% the previous year.
