Russia Prepares Digital Ruble Payment Network for 2026 Launch

Russia’s Central Bank has confirmed a planned launch of its digital ruble payment network in 2026, according to reports by PANews. This timeline represents an earlier than anticipated implementation date, with citizens set to utilize the digital currency through a central bank platform wallet. Early pilot testing involving 15 banks, over 1,700 individuals, and approximately 30 enterprises has successfully progressed.
The initial launch date was previously slated for 2027; however, this change reflects recent progress in technical development and testing. Despite the earlier timeline, Central Bank Governor Nabiullina clarified that the postponement is not linked to pilot program developments.
The Russian government also aims to integrate the digital ruble into public budget payments and subsidy distribution systems to enhance transparency in the flow of funds.
