OpenAI’s pursuit of AI coding assistant company, Anysphere, appears to have stalled. After initial talks fell through in 2024 and 2025, the company shifted its focus towards WindSurf, exploring a potential $3 billion acquisition, according to sources familiar with the deal. This pursuit follows OpenAI’s release of DeepSeek R1 in January 2025, which shook the AI industry by demonstrating comparable performance at a fraction of the cost required for leading models. This breakthrough challenged established beliefs about AI model scaling and sparked financial market concerns. OpenAI is aiming to achieve profitability through paid subscriptions for its models, with over a million premium business subscribers already signed up. However, CEO Sam Altman has cautioned that profit may not be reached until 2029, requiring a revenue stream of around $125 billion.
