Meta Platforms, the parent company of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, will begin utilizing data from its European user base to train its generative artificial intelligence (AI) models starting May 27th. This move aims to enhance the performance and capabilities of Meta’s AI, particularly in chatbot interactions. The company plans to leverage publicly accessible information like comments on posts or Instagram captions for this training. However, private messages exchanged through WhatsApp will not be included in this data pool. Opt-out options are available through a form submission process that raises concerns regarding user privacy. Before May 27th, Meta will communicate the new policy to users and provide a link to an opt-out form for individual control over their content visibility. Notably, the company excludes user profiles under the age of 18 from this data collection practice. Meta’s dedication to AI is reflected in its substantial investment of $60-$65 billion towards this technology this year, primarily focusing on building robust data centers. The company has also developed Llama-4, an open-weight AI model, furthering its efforts in developing cutting-edge AI solutions. Read more about Meta’s latest Llama 4 model.
