Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently discussed the impact of social philosophy during the development of the application layer on Warpcast, emphasizing the importance of decentralized values. According to Odaily, Buterin highlighted that while C++ could be developed under authoritarian control, it would likely still serve its purpose as a general-purpose tool. However, Ethereum’s Layer-1 is fundamentally different; those who don’t embrace decentralization are unlikely to advance features like light clients or Proof of Stake (PoS). He also pointed out that approximately 50% of the Ethereum protocol layer is universal, while about 80% relies on the values and choices made by its builders. The choice of applications built will be significantly influenced by the understanding of Ethereum’s potential contributions to society, underscoring the critical importance of a strong social philosophy.
