Kwara Leads in Yahoo Boys Arrests as EFCC Cracks Down on Internet Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) conducted a crackdown on internet fraudsters, known as ‘Yahoo Boys’, in March 2023. Arrest data reveals that Kwara State emerged as the leading hub for these crimes, with 37 suspects apprehended throughout the month, representing 27.6% of all arrests nationwide. Delta state came next with 30 arrests (22.4%), followed closely by Akwa Ibom with 17.1% and Bauchi with 15.6%. The EFCC also secured convictions for a significant number of individuals in March, ranging from three months to four years in prison, and fines between 30,000 Naira to 500,000 Naira. However, the effectiveness of these penalties remains questionable as many convicted individuals allegedly stole far more than the imposed fine.
