Trump Administration Dismantles DOJ’s Crypto Team Amidst Regulatory Overhaul

The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) is reportedly discontinuing the National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team (NCET), a move that comes amidst a broader restructuring of US crypto regulations under the Trump administration’s successor, President Biden. The disbandment was confirmed by Deputy General Todd Blanche, according to Fortune journalist, whose report cites a memo dated April 8th. In the note, Blanche asserted that the Department of Justice is not equipped for regulating digital assets and criticized the previous administration’s approach to crypto enforcement as reckless. The NCET’s official launch occurred in October 2021 under President Biden’s leadership, with Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco outlining its aim to target platforms enabling illicit activities such as money laundering. This unit has been active since February 2022 and remains online. The team’s disbandment is attributed to the Trump administration’s executive order in January, aimed at reshaping US crypto policy.
