A recent warning from Casa’s Chief Security Officer Jameson Lopp highlights a concerning threat: Bitcoin address poisoning attacks. These deceptive schemes, targeting users’ wallets, involve creating fake addresses that mimic legitimate ones. This tactic tricks victims into sending funds to the wrong destination. Lopp’s analysis reveals that these attacks have been active since July 2023, with nearly 48,000 transactions linked to them, totaling over $1.2 million in losses as of March 2025. Lopp recommends users verify the complete address before sending funds and urges wallet interfaces to prioritize transparency by disclosing the full address structure rather than hiding parts of it.
