Bitcoin Address Poisoning: A Growing Threat Leading to Significant Losses

New warnings from Bitcoin security expert Jameson Lopp, Chief Security Officer at Casa, highlight the rising threat of address poisoning attacks. These sophisticated scams involve creating fake addresses that resemble a user’s historical ones, luring them into sending funds to the wrong wallets. Lopp’s analysis reveals over 48,000 such transactions have already been recorded since July 2023, with losses exceeding $1.2 million by March 2025, according to data from Cyvers. He recommends users be extra cautious when sending funds and calls for improved wallet interfaces that prevent the concealment of address middle parts.
