Senator Hawley Calls for Investigation of FICO’s Market Dominance

Republican Senator Josh Hawley has urged the Justice Department under President Trump’s administration to investigate whether Fair Isaac Corporation (FICO) abuses its dominant position in the US credit scoring market. His letter to Assistant Attorney General Gail Slater cited FICO’s 90% market share and the company’s favorable government contracts that allow it to use its scores for loans originated by various government entities, among other points. The Senator highlighted FICO’s frequent price hikes, alleging it has exploited market power granted by the government, leading to significant financial gains while significantly impacting working Americans struggling to afford housing. Hawley emphasizes the need for a thorough investigation of FICO’s alleged anticompetitive behavior and suggests an immediate action from the DOJ. In his letter, he stated that FICO’s control over credit scoring has resulted in increased burden on borrowers, especially those with lower incomes, forcing them to either pay more upfront or accrue higher interest charges when facing price increases.
