DOGE Layoffs Cause Errors, Prompting New Notices for US Agency Employees

Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), responsible for agency staffing changes, initially issued termination notices to thousands of US Agency for International Development (USAID) employees following a court decision to lift the ban on dismantling the agency last week. However, these notifications contained several errors, forcing the administration to resend corrected versions. These initial inaccuracies included incorrect employment start dates, miscalculations of service length and salaries, all of which determine severance pay and pension benefits. The situation led to confusion among affected employees, as some received notices three years shorter than their actual service history. 5000 USAID jobs have been terminated since February, with many local hires losing their positions in August. 3,500 employees were impacted by the initial error-ridden notices. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is working to rectify the errors with a corrected version issued on Monday.
