A social media theory claims that US President Donald Trump’s newly announced reciprocal tariff plan, which imposes a minimum 10% tariff on all countries, might have been inspired by an artificial intelligence chatbot. Following Trump’s announcement of the tariffs at the White House Rose Garden on April 2nd, some users on the X platform (formerly Twitter) claimed to be able to duplicate the same tariffs using OpenAI’s ChatGPT. NFT collector DCinvestor shared his experience, stating that he was able to replicate the tariff plan with the AI chatbot. He also noted that ChatGPT indicated the idea hadn’t been formally documented before and suggested it originated as an output of its algorithms.
